The GTX22x0 family of universal time interval counters provides all the features of stand-alone counters in PXI form factor. There are three versions of the PXI counters, GTX2210, GTX2220 and GTX2230. The GTX2210 support frequency range up to 225MHz, the GTX2220 to 1.3GHz and the GTX2230 covers frequencies up to 2GHz.

The GTX22x0 series counters have two signal input channels via BNC connectors, an external timebase, arm input, and a gate signal output. The separate input signals can be used for Arming and Gating the circuitry, and controlling the timing of the analysis (start/stop duration) for more meaningful measurements.

The GTX22x0 series counters are universal in that they provide many measurement functions of other frequency counters, including frequency, period, and time interval. The GTX22x0 series also have event counting and timing functions over a single channel, such as totalize and ratio between channels.

Architecture

The GTX22x0 series counters use an on-board microprocessor with embedded firmware to off-load processing tasks from the main CPU. The counters use high-density, low-power Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) to perform complex logic tasks. The GTX22x0 series counters use reciprocal counting techniques to achieve high-resolution measurements on lower frequency signals without sacrificing measurement time. Reciprocal counting provides a fixed number of digits of resolution for all frequencies rather than a fixed resolution in Hz for the same gate time.

The ability to precisely resolve frequency and time yields both increased accuracy as well as reduced measurement time. The GTX2220, for example, can determine any frequency to 0.1 parts per million (seven digits) in just 1 ms, and resolve each time measurement to 100 ps. Couple that with 2300 measurements/sec, one of the fastest rates available, and you can acquire more data in a single second than a typical GPIB counter can in one minute!

The counters include an on-board accurate timebase for internal frequency reference; an external input is provided for external timebases.

Applications

ATE Systems
Event timing measurements
Frequency measurements
Time interval measurements
Software

Geotest supports the GTX22x0 series counters with GXCNT. The GXCNT software supplied with the hardware and available from the Geotest website includes a virtual front panel, DLL driver libraries, and on-line help and documentation.

The virtual panel can be used to interactively control the instrument from a window that displays the current instrument settings and allows you to control and change them.

The driver is a library of functions that is used to control and change the instrument settings from within your application. The instrument driver is provided for Windows operating system (32 bit DLL). In addition to the driver library, various interface files provide access to the library from your favorite programming tools and languages. These interface files support programming from ATEasy, Microsoft and Borland C/C++, Microsoft Visual Basic, Borland Delphi and more.
