La serie Boonton 4540 son instrumentos que se seleccionan para la captura, despliege y analisis de potencia de RF en el dominio del tiempo y de la estadistica. Las aplicaciones incluyen señales pulsadas de RF como las de radar, TDMA, GSM, señales pseudo aleatorias o parecidas a ruido como las señales de CDMA, WLAN y WiMAX.

La serie 4540 puede ser de uno (4541) o dos canales (4542) de RF. El medidor puede medir señales moduladas o CW (portadoras) usando sensores Boonton de pico (Peak) o de promedio (Averange). El rango de la amplitud y frecuencia es determinado por el sensor que se usa.
